History Comes Alive Weekend at the Indiana Dunes

Indiana Dunes State Park

Indiana Dunes State Park invites guests to re-live history of the Indiana Dunes area on Sept. 11 and 12.

All weekend long, members of the Ouiatenon Brigade will be set up on the beach, just east of the Beach Pavilion. The Ouiatenon Brigade portrays the French-Canadian voyageurs of the 1700s, and prides itself in its authenticity of dress, food and general lifestyle.

The group encampment will be located near the pavilion and will be available for visitors to experience throughout the weekend. Interpretive naturalists will lead hikes to the encampment from the nature center. Other programs highlighting the park’s early history will occur both days, including Native American demonstrations at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center.

“To be standing by the brigade with the foredunes in the background really allows you to step back and imagine the time of early French-Canadian fur traders,” said Brad Bumgardner, park interpretive naturalist. “It is a really neat site to see.”

History Comes Alive focuses on the early history of the park, and coincides with the Lake Michigan Coastal Program’s Coast Week. Many of the programs offered at the state park event focus on the cultural history surrounding the Lake Michigan region.

Though the program is free, the standard weekend gate fee of $5 per Indiana vehicle and $10 for out-of -state vehicles will be charged. For more information about this program or others at Indiana Dunes State Park, call (219) 926-1390.
