The juried exhibition will display more than 60 works of art created by students and selected by two professional artists from the region.

Gloria Ruff, assistant curator of the museum, said that jurors reviewed more than 160 student works in selecting those to include in the Showcase.

“This is a great opportunity for these high school students to be able to exhibit their work in a museum,” Ruff said. “The Northwest community can now see the talent of these young artists and the quality of the education that area art teachers are providing.”

An awards ceremony and opening reception for the public will be held at 6 p.m. March 31 at the museum, and those in attendance are invited to vote for several viewers’ choice awards. The Secondary School Showcase will be displayed through April 18.

Works in the Showcase were created by students from Bishop Noll, Chesterton, Crown Point, George Rogers Clark, Hebron, Knox, Kouts, La Lumiere, Lake Central, Merrillville, Portage and Valparaiso high schools and Emerson School of Visual and Performing Arts. Judging works entered into the Showcase by 34 art teachers across the region were Andrea Peterson and Jon Hook.

Peterson is an award-winning Northwest Indiana artist, papermaker, and educator who runs her own art business and teaches and exhibits nationally. Peterson has curated and juried regional exhibitions, and currently serves on the board of directors of Hand Papermaking, Inc., an international journal on papermaking and the paper arts. Hook is a Studio ceramic artist who creates sculptural work and functional pottery.  His work is exhibited nationally and can be found in private collections across the country.  Hook also teaches and conducts workshops at his own studio as well as at National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts.

Pieces selected by the judges for the Secondary School Showcase span a variety of media, including painting, photography, metal-working, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and computer-generated art. Stodder and Brand will attend the opening reception to discuss how they judged the students’ artwork and comment on some of the works selected for the show.

Supporting the exhibition and offering several cash prizes for students are 119th Street Artists, Centier Bank, Cesare Battista Italian-American Lodge, Das Dairy Queen, Richard and Karen DePirro, Glenn L. Firme and Associates, Illiana Artists Organization of Munster, Partners for the Brauer Museum of Art, S & R Management Inc. and Tri Kappa (Valparaiso Beta Chapter and Zeta Mu Chapter).

“The Secondary Showcase is something we always look forward to because the entire region is able to celebrate and encourage the young artists in our communities,” Ruff said. “The Showcase also is a good educational experience that allows these students to go through the process of entering a juried art show.”
